the perfection of fruits grown under glass

Young Fletcher was educated at Cambridge. As a playwright - and indeed as a person - he was most intimately associated with Francis Beaumont, with whom he enjoyed a strikingly singular relationship. From 1607 to 1613 they were virtually inseparable. They slept in the same bed, shared a mistress and even dressed identically, according to John Aubrey. During this period they co-wrote ten or so plays, including The Maid’s Tragedy and the very successful A King and No King. But then Beaumont abruptly married, and the partnership just as abruptly ceased.

Bill Bryson in his fantastic biography Shakespeare, discussing some of ~The Bard’s contemporaries/collaborators. I am fascinated by/envious of this kind of relationship, always.

Conan's Exit Confirmed, Leaving NBC with a Payout

whydoihaveablog:

Damn.

To see some dude who seems like a good guy lose his dream job and be publicly humiliated by his employers of 17 years? It’s just a bummer to witness. That’s all there is to it. It’s just such a bummer.

I spent a good half hour last night trying to sum up my feelings on this whole thing but got so frustrated that in the end I just closed the browser and watched all the youtube clips of him in Finland instead. I said some stuff about how NBC saying young people don’t watch television when it’s actually on television anymore (and then scheduling programming around the tastes of older folks) is basically just instigating a self-fulfilling prophecy. I said some stuff about how I hope Conan takes a prompt from this criticism and makes the leap to some new, progressive, internet platform where he’ll get the backing and the acclaim and the (international) audience he deserves. Then I said some stuff about how that’s just not the point, at all. I believe I also said “fuck you, NBC” and cast some shame upon Leno. And then I made a Mean Girls joke about how I don’t even go here so it doesn’t really have anything to do with me. But in summation, iawtc. The whole big sorry mess is just such a bummer.

qt!

obsessing hard, guys.

It’s been said before, but HOW MUCH DOES THIS LOOK LIKE MADONNA. It has to be on purpose, and I love it.

I battled executives today, diversified my portfolio (seriously), managed $1.5 billion in potential construction, translated a poem in Yiddish, got totally fucking freaked out about HOW INSANE my next semester is going to be between my mega-intense super-legit poetry workshop and my seminar in translation (omg, 200 pages of reading a week and multiple translations and translator’s notes and maintaining syntax and structure and rhyme and meter and omg), I’m going to be in NJ every weekend this month for various reasons, and multiple men rose from the grave and started talking to me again.

Holy fucking giant glass of wine for dinner. Love you dudes.

GIRL HAVE YOU READ ‘AFTER BABEL’? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/After_Babel I just took it out of the uni library for like the fourth time and I’m determined to read it - they talked about it a ton in my comparative lit class last year and it sounds pretty relevant to my interests. BOOK CLUB BOOK CLUB BOOK CLUB (if you want).

PS. I had popcorn and a can of red bull for dinner - I think my body is about ready to finally. just. DIE.

UM THE FIRST THING ON MY SYLLABUS FOR MY TRANSLATION SEMINAR IS A QUOTE FROM AFTER BABEL. I’m pretty sure I’m going to up to my gills in reading for the semester (Celan?! Lorca?! IN THE ORIGINAL GERMAN/SPANISH?!) but I’m totally going to read it over the summer / between classes. If you get through it let me know how it is!!

I will get back 2 u. Or, you know, what is more likely is that I still won’t have read it by summer and we can just read it then, togethah.

Wait, do you know German/Spanish?! If not: how is that going to work! If yes: WHAT ARE YOU LIKE AN IMMORTAL OR SOMETHING HOW DO YOU KNOW SO MUCH!!!

Scissor Sisters — It Can’t Come Quickly Enough

I heard this in a dream once, when I barely knew it. I can’t remember what the dream was about but the song stayed with me for days.

Dang, how good was this BAND and where did they GO.
